In her twenty years in the music industry, we’ve seen our
dear Songbird’s evolution from a simple “probinsyana”
to the Fashion Icon that she is now. It was very much like a
Cinderella story; only that Regine’s transformation wasn’t
done with just one wave of a magic wand. Her eagerness to
learn and love for experimenting was what helped her in
developing her own style.
Even in her younger days, Regine was never afraid to take big
steps. It can even be recalled that in 1988, she cut her hair
short as a protest when her concert was moved to give way to a
foreign group called “The Jets” who were performing on
that same day. This bold act paved the way for a new Regine.
Over the years we’ve seen her sport different hairstyles;
but whether it be the long cascading curls ala Farrah Faucet,
or that “chopped bangs” look, the Songbird never fails to
carry it with glamour and confidence.
Another side of her, which not a lot of people may be aware
of, is the fact that she does her own make up. Regine noticed
that whenever another person did her make up, she looked
different. So, to make her appearance more consistent she
decided to learn how to do it herself, by reading fashion
magazines, and observing other make up artists. She felt that
in doing this, she’d be able to emphasize her own beauty.
During the onset of her career, it was Louie Mamengo who
supplied her gowns for her concerts and TV shows. And with his
help and guidance, Regine was able to cultivate her panache
for fashion and designing. From then on, she never stopped
learning, and as the years progressed, this Diva never ceased
to amaze us with her continuous self re-invention, which has
set her apart from the rest. It has been her principle to
never go with the trend. Regine believes that it is one’s
personality that should carry the clothes and not the other
way around. Aside from famous brands like, Dolce and Gabbana,
Prada, and Louis Vuitton, where she buys some of her clothes,
shoes and even bags, Regine also adores local designers in the
likes of Rajo Laurel, Pepsi Herrera and Edwin Tan.
Regine is also into body art.
In fact, she has two tattoos; a monarch butterfly on her lower
back and a tattoo of roses and vines on her right ankle.
She’s also fond of doing “henna”
tattoos and has demonstrated her skill several times in TV
shows and even during an event at Café Carabana [the
restaurant owned by Judy Ann Santos], where she did some
tattooing for her fans.
Brought about by her love for
fashion, the Songbird decided, [together with sister Cacai
Velasquez-Mitra] to venture into the clothing business. It was
in 2004 that “Reigne” was launched in collaboration with
Sari-Sari, her very own clothing line.
